Inspiration

As a student, I’ve had my fair share of overwhelming nights—flipping through textbooks, jumping between topics, and feeling completely lost on where to start. In those moments, what I needed wasn’t another lecture or more material—I needed someone to just simplify things, help me focus, and remind me that I could do it.

That experience inspired me to

create Study Buddy AI. I wanted to build a simple, approachable tool that acts like a study partner—something that doesn't judge or overwhelm you, but helps you take one step at a time with confidence and clarity.

What It Does

Study Buddy AI is a web app designed to support high school students through three key things: simple revision, daily motivation, and personalized study planning.

Students can type in any topic they're struggling with, and the app gives them five clear, easy-to-understand revision points. They can also generate a weekly study plan by choosing their subjects and exam date. To keep them emotionally supported, the app includes a daily motivational quote and (optionally) a mood tracker with encouraging messages based on how they’re feeling.

The goal

is to make studying feel less stressful and more manageable—like having a friend who's always there to help you stay on track.

How We Built It

We built the app entirely using no-code and low-code tools. Glide was used for building the user interface and app logic. Google Sheets served as the data backend to store topics, responses, quotes, and plans. To power the AI features, we used Make.com to automate connections between the app and the OpenAI API.

When a student enters a topic or selects their subjects, Make sends the request to ChatGPT and brings back the response—whether it's a revision summary, a motivational quote, or a weekly study plan—which is then displayed in the app automatically.

Challenges We Ran Into

One of the biggest challenges was crafting the right prompts for ChatGPT. The AI responses needed to be simple, friendly, and helpful for high school students—not too technical, not too vague. It took several iterations to get that balance right.

We also faced limitations within Glide. Some interface elements were tricky to customize, so we had to get creative to make the experience smooth and user-friendly. Another challenge was dealing with response delays when sending and receiving data between Google Sheets and Make.

Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

We're proud that we built a fully functional AI-powered learning assistant without writing a single line of traditional code. Everything was done using no-code platforms, which made the project more accessible and faster to build.

We're also proud that this app came from a real place of need. It reflects an honest student experience, and it aims to make a genuine difference in how students study and feel about their learning.

What We Learned

Throughout this project, we learned how powerful no-code tools can be when combined with AI. We explored how to integrate OpenAI effectively through prompt design and automation.

We also learned how to focus on user experience—not just in terms of design, but in emotional support. Sometimes, a tool doesn't have to be complex; it just has to care about the user.

What's Next for Study Buddy AI

We have several ideas for what comes next. We'd love to add voice input and text-to-speech output to make the app more accessible. We’re also planning to introduce a progress tracker with daily study streaks, and allow students to chat with the AI for more interactive support.

Looking ahead, we hope to translate the app into regional languages and potentially collaborate with schools or educational platforms to reach more students who can benefit from it.
