Inspiration

As 2 college graduates who have experienced the stress of completing assignments and studying for exams, we wanted to create a platform that alleviates students' stress and holds students accountable by providing them with suitable study companions.

What it does

Our web application is used so students can find study partners. On the home page, they are given the option to join a digital cafe or use the matching feature to find a real-life, compatible study buddy. If the matching feature option is chosen, they will be asked to create an account or login in order for the app to save their studying preferences. Based on their selected studying preferences, they will be matched with three nearby users who have similar preferences and be able to use our chat feature to communicate with them.

How we built it

We used Django, a popular Python web framework, to integrate the frontend and backend components. The frontend was completed using HTML/CSS based on the Figma design prototypes and functionality including login, registering, and matching with study buddies were implemented in Python.

Challenges we faced

The design portion of our app was built through Figma. However, we had trouble integrating the front end with the back end. This was because we felt that the front end design portion needed to be completed first before we could successfully tie it with the backend. The design portion ended up taking a long time as there were constant tweaks to the designs so we were short on time to fully flesh out the backend.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the novel idea as we feel we could all benefit from having an app like this. Also, it was Patrick's first time creating the design prototype from scratch by himself as well as his first hackathon. We are also proud of how we were able to work together despite our completely different skill sets and lack of time.

What we learned

We learned that is was more difficult than we imagined to integrate the frontend and the backend.

What's next for Study Buddies

We definitely need to improve the functionality to make the app work more smoothly.
