Inspiration

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association, over 80% of students report feeling stressed over their schoolwork. In another study, students reports being distracted for 37% of their total studying time. This inspired me to make an app which truly benefits students, of any age.

What it does

Study Bubbles is an app to help motivate, collaborate, and focus students. Through the various features within the app, students are given positive reinforcement to help encourage them to keep studying. They are also rewarded for taking breaks and prioritizing mental health, as well.

Personal Bubble Students have the option of creating a personal bubble that they can focus in. Within this bubble, they are told how long they have studied and positive affirmations. The student can also put a goal at the top of the bubble, with the bubble-wand, to further motivate them. All of these features are to create a gentle distraction from the student using their phone as a distraction.

Group Bubble If students want to work together or study with friends, one person can start a group bubble and share their unique code with their peers and share a bubble. This lets them stay motivated as they see that their friends are studying, too! Furthermore, there is an optional chat feature within the group bubble, with a cool down, to allow flexibility between staying focused but also motivating each other.

Self-Care Bubble Even when students are not studying, they need to know their mental health is a priority. With the self-care bubble, the user can input how they are feeling and get a positive affirmation to tell themselves. Furthermore, they can follow the timer for breathing exercises to focus on resetting their mind and relaxing.

Other Features Study Bubble also has the capabilities of tracking the total number of study sessions (bubbles) as well as the total time spent studying. Furthermore, the app offers a simple user interface for a student of any age.

How I built it

I started with the problem at hand and then I built the full prototype from scratch on paper. I then implemented my frames and ideas into a Figma board with prototype additions. I hand crafted the images and made sure the prototype had consistency in its palette, placement, and overall flow of project. In total I ended up with 10 unique frames and 200+ components for my board!

Challenges I ran into

As a team of 1, as well as a beginner hacker, I noticed lots of things that would have been made easier with more experience or with a team. However, this meant I learnt a lot of skills very quickly, like how to prototype a Figma board (I had never done that before!). I also spent a large amount of time attempting to download Flask on my virtual machine connection but it would not work, which hindered me and took quite a bit of time.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Even with the difficulties, I am immensely proud of the project that I came up with and I genuinely think that Study Bubbles, with some months of work and tweaking, could be an app on the market. I fully prototyped Study Bubbles because I struggled with stopping once I had an idea in mind but on the flipside, this means that all that is left to do is implement the app as a Web Application for mobile users.

I am also quite proud that I attended another Hackathon!

What I learned

I learned how to make and prototype a Figma board, how to install Homebew, how to install Flask, and the steps I need to do to install Python into Flask at a later date. I also learned how to use critical thinking and references to support my project idea as it greatly inspired me on how to design my project. I do think I will perhaps have a team next Hackathon, though!

What's next for Study Bubbles

Study Buddies is on the way to becoming an app. With the Figma prototyping abilities, I can quickly see what needs to be programmed - and how. I will use a tech stack which includes Flask for my development and so that I can also use Study Buddies for me own homework!
