Inspiration

This project was inspired by modern AI learning platforms such as ChatGPT, Khan Academy AI Tutor, and other educational assistant tools. The goal was to create a centralized study platform where students can solve math problems, summarize notes, improve grammar, and get instant AI-powered academic assistance from a single dashboard.

What it does

Study AI is an AI-powered web application that helps students study more efficiently from one place. Users can ask questions to an AI tutor, solve math problems with step-by-step help, summarize long notes into short key points, improve grammar in English writing, and track their past requests through a personal dashboard. The app also includes user authentication, request history, and a daily usage limit system.

How we built it

I built this project using Next.js as the full-stack framework and TypeScript for type safety. The frontend was designed with Tailwind CSS and shadcn/ui components to create a modern and responsive interface. MongoDB was used as the database, while Mongoose handled database operations. User authentication was implemented using JWT and bcrypt for secure password management. The OpenAI API was integrated to power features such as AI tutoring, math problem solving, grammar correction, and note summarization. Server Actions were used to handle backend operations, and a usage-tracking system was implemented to limit daily requests and store user activity history.

Challenges we ran into

Integrating the OpenAI API smoothly

Handling API responses, errors, and maintaining a fast user experience required careful backend logic and request management.

Managing authentication securely

Implementing JWT-based authentication and password hashing with bcrypt while keeping routes protected was a key challenge.

Building a scalable Next.js structure

Organizing server actions, API calls, and frontend components in the App Router architecture took planning and refactoring.

Rendering mathematical expressions correctly

Displaying AI-generated math solutions in a readable format using KaTeX required additional parsing and formatting work.

Implementing usage limits and history tracking

We had to design a system that records user activity, enforces daily request limits, and still feels seamless for the user.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Creating a complete AI study platform

Instead of building a single feature, we successfully combined tutoring, math solving, grammar correction, and note summarization into one cohesive product.

Building a modern full-stack application

We used Next.js, TypeScript, MongoDB, and Tailwind CSS to create a production-style web app with a clean and responsive UI.

Implementing secure user authentication

Users can sign up, log in securely, and access personalized features like request history and dashboards.

Delivering a polished user experience

Features like animated UI elements, responsive design, dark mode support, and readable math formatting make the app feel professional and user-friendly.

Learning real-world AI integration

We gained hands-on experience connecting a web application with OpenAI models and handling AI-generated content effectively.

What we learned

Through this project, I gained practical experience in full-stack web development using Next.js and TypeScript. I learned how to integrate OpenAI APIs into a real-world application, manage user authentication using JWT, secure passwords with bcrypt, store and retrieve data using MongoDB and Mongoose, implement server actions, manage user request limits, and build responsive user interfaces using Tailwind CSS and shadcn/ui. I also learned how to structure scalable applications and handle AI-generated content effectively.

What's next for Study AI

We plan to enhance Study AI with personalized learning, AI-generated quizzes, voice interaction, advanced math solving, PDF analysis, and multi-language support. In the future, we aim to develop a mobile app and transform Study AI into a complete AI-powered learning platform that helps students learn, track progress, and prepare for exams more effectively.
