Inspiration
One of my friends was talking to me the other day and telling me how she couldn’t get to one of the assignments my teacher has posted on Microsoft Teams, and I had to spend a half-hour helping her because of this. I wondered why everything was so scattered across various platforms. My friend also told me about how she signed up for a French pen pal because she was feeling bored, so it got me thinking about how to better connect students during this pandemic using a consolidated learning management system.
What it does
Study Abroad is an online learning management platform for students. It encourages diversity through connection with students globally and provides an academic portfolio for students to showcase achievements.
How I built it
First, I wireframed it using paper prototyping. Then, I made a low-fidelity prototype of how we wanted the app to look using Figma and Adobe XD, and finally, I made a high-fidelity wireframe.
Challenges I ran into
- A big challenge was the time constraints that I had. Because this hackathon took place during only one weekend, we weren't able to make a complete version of the app and add many things that we planned to add.
- Another challenge we ran into was the domain. I originally planned to link the domain to an Adobe XD link of our prototype, but it was hard to find a name, and after I did find a name, we ran into issues with connecting the prototype to the domain, so we weren’t able to make a domain.
Accomplishments that I’m proud of
- I am proud that I was able to make a high-fidelity prototype in the short time span that I was given.
- I am also proud of the design and colors we chose to make the final app look interesting and appealing.
- Something that was challenging was collecting data from actual teens. But, I made a survey and received more than 45 responses :)
What I learned
Through this project, I learned about the need for cross-country connection that existed before, but is even more important now because of the pandemic. I also learned how to prototype using Figma and Adobe XD, which were completely new tools to me. However, I think that I rose to the challenge and delivered to the best of my ability.
What’s next for Study Abroad?
In the future, I plan to add more features to help teachers, including a grade interface, a secure testing browser, and (potentially) an AI-based cheating detector that analyzes eye movements to ensure testing integrity.
