Inspiration

Independent filmmakers rarely have a full production-management team, so turning a screenplay into a workable shoot plan is slow, manual work usually done by one overworked producer. This felt personal to me: years spent as a wiki administrator taught me how much invisible work goes into tracking what's true, what's changed, and what needs re-verification. I wanted to bring that same discipline to screenplay production planning, where a plan built once often goes stale the moment reality shifts.

What it does

StudioPilot takes a screenplay and extracts its scenes, characters, locations, props, and dependencies. It verifies key production details like locations, permits, and weather against current information using Parallel's Search API, then assembles everything into an organized production plan with flagged risks, severities, and mitigation strategies. Risks can be marked Open, In Progress, or Resolved, and a Recheck Production feature re-verifies prior findings on demand, detects what's changed, and reopens any resolved risk that new information contradicts.

How we built it

I orchestrated five agents with Google's Agent Development Kit, using Gemini for reasoning at each stage: a Script Analyst to parse the screenplay, a Research Agent that calls Parallel's Search API, a Production Planner that assembles the plan, a Risk Analyst that flags and mitigates risks, and a Change Monitor that powers Recheck Production. The backend runs on Google Cloud Run, and the frontend is a dedicated production dashboard rather than a chatbot interface.

Challenges we ran into

Getting the Research Agent to call Parallel reliably, instead of skipping research when Gemini judged it unnecessary, took forcing the function call rather than leaving it to the model's judgment. Recheck Production was harder than expected too, since it needed to re-verify only what was previously researched and correctly trace a change down to specific scenes and risks without regenerating the whole plan from scratch.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Getting the full pipeline working end-to-end, from screenplay input to a verified production plan with sourced research and live risk tracking, with Recheck Production actually demonstrating why a living plan matters instead of just claiming it.

What we learned

Production management is really a continuous verification problem in disguise. The hard part isn't generating a plan once, it's keeping it true as conditions change, and that reframing shaped most of my architectural decisions.

What's next for StudioPilot

Support for multiple concurrent screenplays, budget-impact estimates on flagged risks, and exportable call sheets and schedules producers could hand directly to a crew.
