Inspiration

As the Child Mind Institute mentions, “They [students] have a hard time focusing on learning, or making an organized effort to get homework done,” which has not only led to devastating outcomes in the students' education but also the system and the mental health of said students. The pandemic “inhibits student feedback, causes social isolation, and may lead to students feeling unmotivated” (Bay Atlantic University). In order to address this problem, we came up with the best elements to counteract the effects of stress and demotivation to study. Personally, we also have been struggling to study, coming to this Hackathon rather than finishing up homework, and we wanted a tool to make studying more exciting for us. Elements such as music ”activates both the left and right brain at the same time, and the activation of both hemispheres can maximize learning and improve memory” (Florida National University). Through timers, they help students stay on track and maintain their focus on a single task; “you can give yourself the best chance of staying on track and organized during the exam period, which in turn can help reduce stress levels,” (Rachel Campbell). Other additional features such as the study buddy provide students company so that they are not so alone and the study resources provide a shortcut for them to tools that might benefit them in the future. Finally, the pandemic has affected the education of everyone, specially those of low income, so those with the luck of having enough resources in their surroundings could help others who might not be as fortunate.

What it does

This website offers an aesthetic and distraction-free environment by providing several tools to assist with organization and time management (like a helpful to-do list, a timer, and fun activities for breaks). The website also offers background music for those who prefer to study with some ambient noise and links to useful websites for further assistance. In studie, we also offer emotional support buttons that offer a quick joke or pick-me-up for users who may be feeling down or unmotivated. Overall, this website is an excellent resource for anyone looking to improve their productivity and focus, and it offers a range of helpful features to help users achieve their goals.

How we built it

We built studie through Glitch using HTML, CSS, and javascript.

Challenges we ran into

None of us had prior experience with website development, including basic HTML coding. To move forward, we had to educate ourselves on website development and conduct extensive research on various website developers. We needed to learn how to establish an aesthetic website to create a positive vibe that is conducive to studying and ensure that all of our features worked correctly and provided a smooth user experience. Despite this roadblock, we persevered and learned new skills, and we were eventually able to create a study website that we are proud of. Through our efforts, we have gained valuable experience and knowledge that we can apply to future projects.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are especially proud of the various features our website offers. Each of these features was a significant accomplishment on its own, but we are particularly proud of our Break Time Random Button and Study Timer, which required more extensive research and time to develop. Beyond these features, we are also proud of the website's overall visuals and cohesiveness. Our attention to detail and focus on optimizing the user's experience has resulted in a website that is both aesthetically pleasing and easy to navigate (with an addition of a User Manual).

What we learned

Although initially wanting to make a game from Java, we ended up creating a website for studying through Glitch. None of us had prior experience coding in HTML or making websites before. Our long hours coding and a sleepless night really taught us a lot about how HTML works and how to create websites from scratch.

None of us had any prior experience with HTML or website development, which allowed us to learn a lot more. After a sleepless night, we learnt a lot about HTML (in its frontend and backend features) and how to create a website from scratch. Throughout the project, we gained a deeper understanding of coding concepts and learned how to apply these skills to the real-world..

What's next for studie

We plan to implement an AI ChatBot to assist users in their studies, a Study Buddy finding system, and a suggestion box for user input in order to enhance the website's functionality and user experience.
