Inspiration

Students have access to countless opportunities—competitions, programs, projects, scholarships, and ways to develop skills. The problem is that finding the right opportunity and figuring out what to do next can be difficult.

I wanted to build something that helps students move beyond simply discovering opportunities and actually take action on them.

That idea became Student OPS: a platform designed to help students turn their interests and goals into opportunities, projects, skills, and measurable achievements.

What it does

Student OPS utilizes AI to help students:

  • Discover opportunities that match their interests, skills, and goals
  • Find projects they can realistically build and use to develop their skills
  • Create roadmaps that break larger goals into actionable milestones
  • Track projects and achievements as they progress
  • Build a portfolio using evidence from their real work
  • Identify skill gaps and understand what they can work on next

The goal is to connect the entire journey:

Goals → Opportunities → Projects → Skills → Evidence → Achievements

How i built it

Student OPS was built as a native iOS application using SwiftUI and Swift in Xcode.

The app uses AI through Groq to generate recommendations and insights while keeping the experience structured around specific student workflows rather than functioning as a generic chatbot.

I also built systems for opportunity matching, skill-gap analysis, project recommendations, roadmap generation, evidence quality, portfolio building, and progress tracking.

The project i through multiple iterations, with testing and refinement across the major features to make sure the different parts of the app worked together as one system.

Challenges i ran into

One of the biggest challenges was deciding how AI should actually be used.

It would have been easy to make Student OPS a chatbot that simply gives students suggestions. Instead, I wanted AI to work behind structured features and produce actionable results.

Another challenge was connecting opportunities, skills, projects, roadmaps, and portfolios without making the experience feel overwhelming. Each feature had to contribute to the same overall student journey.

I also had to balance building new functionality with fixing bugs, testing existing features, and polishing the experience for a real demonstration.

Accomplishments that I am proud of

I'm proud that Student OPS became more than an opportunity-search tool. It connects discovery with action.

A student can start with a goal, discover relevant opportunities, receive project recommendations, build skills through those projects, and eventually turn the work into evidence for their portfolio.

I'm also proud of building the application as a functional native iOS experience and developing multiple systems that work together rather than relying on a single AI prompt.

What I have learned

This project taught me that building with AI is not just about generating responses. The most useful AI experiences combine AI with good product structure, reliable data, and clear actions.

I also learned a lot about SwiftUI, application architecture, API integration, product design, testing, and iterating based on feedback.

Most importantly, I learned how much work goes into turning an idea into a product that someone can actually use.

What's next for StudentOPS

The next step is making Student OPS even more personalized and useful for students.

I want to expand the opportunity database, improve AI matching, add more project recommendations, strengthen portfolio generation, and make the roadmaps even more adaptive to each student's progress.

The long-term goal is to make Student OPS a place where students can go from "I want to achieve something" to "I know exactly what I can do next."
