Inspiration
As students, we often found ourselves struggling to keep our notes, resources, and academic materials organized. Sharing notes with peers was tedious, and finding reliable study materials online was even harder. This inspired us to build StudentHub — a centralized platform where students can easily upload, access, and manage academic notes and resources, promoting collaborative learning.
What it does
StudentHub is a web-based application that allows students to upload, view, and manage notes efficiently. Users can create an account, organize notes by subject or topic, and access content shared by others. It serves as a mini digital library, simplifying resource sharing within academic communities.
How we built it
We built StudentHub using the MERN stack:
- Frontend: React.js for a responsive and interactive UI.
- Backend: Node.js with Express.js to manage API routes.
- Database: MongoDB for storing user data and notes.
- Authentication: Implemented user login/signup using JWT for secure access. We deployed the project on Heroku and used GitHub for version control and collaboration.
Challenges we ran into
- Integrating authentication securely took more time than expected.
- File upload and preview functionality was tricky, especially handling different file types.
- Optimizing the UI for mobile devices required extra testing and tweaking.
- Managing real-time data updates and MongoDB schema design was initially challenging.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Completed a fully functional and deployed project.
- Designed a clean and intuitive user interface.
- Built a scalable and secure backend with JWT-based authentication.
- Enabled seamless sharing and retrieval of notes with other users.
What we learned
In-depth understanding of the full MERN stack and how to integrate all parts smoothly. Practical experience with authentication and authorization. Better grasp of deploying apps and working with cloud platforms like Heroku. Importance of user-centric design and mobile responsiveness.
What's next for StudentHub
- Adding support for comments, likes, and user interactions on notes.
- Implementing role-based access and moderation for content.
- Adding tags, search filters, and categories for better content discovery.
- Creating a mobile app version for Android/iOS.
- Exploring integration with Google Drive or OneDrive for backup and syncing.
