From sketchy listings to vague details that make you question reality, the struggle is all too real. We wanted to change that! Enter Student Sphere—a platform that takes the guesswork out of house hunting. Plus, with university email verification, we’ve built a trusted community where students and landlords can finally play nice.
What it does
"Student Sphere" is the ultimate online marketplace for student housing—minus the stress. Here’s the rundown:
For Tenants: Property owners can easily list their rental spaces, sharing the essentials like price, location, and what cool perks come with the place (like a dishwasher that actually works). For Students: Students can browse listings with all the details—price, landlord info, ratings, and reviews from previous tenants who aren’t afraid to spill the tea. Verified Access: Only students with a verified university email can join, so everyone on the platform is legit—no shady business here! Transparency: Read reviews from people who’ve been there, done that. No more guessing if that "cozy" apartment is actually a closet. We’re here to make the housing search way easier, faster, and way less stressful for both students and landlords.
How we built it
We built "Student Sphere" using a mix of modern tech to keep things smooth and user-friendly:
Frontend: We went with React and TypeScript for a fast, responsive, and interactive interface. Next.js made it even better, improving performance, speeding up load times, and boosting SEO. Backend and Database: Firebase took care of the backend, offering real-time database functionality and cloud storage to manage user data, listings, and reviews without breaking a sweat. Authentication: We integrated Auth0 for secure logins and smooth university email verification, ensuring only verified students get access. Maps Integration: We used the Google Maps API to add a cool heat map feature, letting students easily compare rental prices and find the best places to live. AI-Powered Insights: Thanks to OpenAI, we made the platform even smarter with property recommendations and review analysis, giving students the inside scoop on their next place. By blending these awesome technologies, we created a platform that’s secure, scalable, and designed to make student housing a whole lot easier.
Challenges we ran into
While building "Student Sphere," we hit a few bumps along the way, but hey, no journey is smooth, right? Here’s what we tackled:
University Email Verification: Making sure only verified students could join was no small feat. We had to dive deep into Auth0 and fine-tune the email verification process, which took a bit more time than expected—but it was worth it for security! Real-Time Data Management: With users constantly posting, browsing, and reviewing properties, syncing real-time updates was tricky. Thanks to Firebase, we managed to keep things smooth and fast without compromising performance. Geolocation and Mapping: Integrating the Google Maps API for that beautiful heat map feature didn’t come without its challenges. We had to fine-tune performance to handle large datasets and ensure accuracy—but the final result was totally worth it. UI/UX Design: We wanted to balance providing all the essential info (like property details, landlord ratings, and reviews) with keeping the design sleek and easy to use. Finding that sweet spot took a lot of refining, but we nailed it in the end! AI Integration: Adding OpenAI for smart property recommendations and review analysis brought in some complexity. Ensuring it delivered valuable insights without overwhelming the user was a fun challenge that took some constant tweaking. Despite these obstacles, we turned each challenge into an opportunity to learn and improve—making "Student Sphere" better and more efficient every step of the way.

User-Friendly Interface: We designed a sleek, intuitive UI/UX, making it simple for students to filter and explore properties, ratings, and reviews without breaking a sweat. These accomplishments show how our hard work paid off in making a platform that’s not just functional but also student-friendly and reliable.

Building "Student Sphere" was a major learning experience, and here’s what we picked up along the way:
User-Centric Design is Key: We quickly realized that a platform’s success depends on how easy and enjoyable it is for users to navigate. Keeping things simple and intuitive was a game-changer! Security and Scalability Matter: We learned the importance of keeping data secure, ensuring only verified students could access the platform, and designing for growth—because, let’s face it, every student in the world could use a better housing platform! Collaboration is Everything: Every team member brought something unique to the table, whether it was coding, design, or creative thinking. Together, we made something way cooler than any of us could have done alone. Overall, this project was a crash course in making a platform that’s both functional and fun to use, all while learning the ropes of secure, scalable web development.
