Inspiration
The brother of Fred who was bored on campus, unable to know where to start and find events to explore the campus and learn more about Gainesville.
What it does
Login as a user for saved data or be a guest for fast spontaneous side quests. If signed in you can curate your prefrences for sidequests (ex. nature focused) and can even add goals you wish to accomplish with sidequests over time (for smaller more spontaneous repetative sidequest prefrences and auto filling use "vibe"). Add the budget, time, distance, and location for your sidequest (if wanted) as well as other advanced options to get the perfect sidequest for you. Then all your data (as a JSON) gets sent to Gemini which parses and gives out a response JSON that builds an itinerary of what to do, where to go, how to prove you did it (if not recreation, which needs no proof, can be photo or location proof), and what you gain from doing the sidequest (XP and Skills). Then verifies all this for accuracy with geo boundry, location double checking, prompt hallucination fallback, and harsh model conditions. You can also be a organization and make global quests which anyone can accept to learn more about your organization (this is auto generated also containing UF calander events, organization events or manually calender events are automatically given to people with admin powers who also get admin panels). There is a leaderboard to see how you fare against others and their sidequesting as well as dorm based leaderboards where dorms can compete with combined scores for sidequesting (to build social connection). The end goal of this website is to foster community, get freshman and people who don't know where to start the will to go out for something new, and to help people learn more in ways they don't expect.
How we built it
It was built using the frontend of ReactJS + Vite w/ Typescript and the backend of FastAPI w/ Python. We run the backend on a self hosted server which connects to our firestore database. When the user needs to get data or use data we fetch from the backend which can share data with firestore and gives it to the frontend for seamless and fast computations, needed for AI integration.
Challenges we ran into
-Gemini API issues and hallucination as well as prompt engineering -Curating the UI for the style and usability -Understanding the best way to collaborate with a team of four -Fetching and integration of seperate frontend and backend
Accomplishments that we're proud of
-A working full project -Image checking for proving completion with AI -Successful prompt engineering -Biggest project worked on and deployed with others
What we learned
-Prompt Engineering -Integration of FastAPI backend -Fullstack development with seperate languages -Usage of AI tools
What's next for Student Sidequester
-Accessories/Rewards for leaderboard winners -Seasonal/Semester leaderboards -Delete all slots function -Expansion of other Gainesville events and Florida events super far down
