Inspiration
We were inspired to create this project after experiencing the difficulties and frustrations that students often face when selecting courses at UPC. We saw an opportunity to leverage technology to simplify the process and make it more efficient for students.
What it does
Our UPC subject search engine allows students to search for subjects by various criteria, such as keywords, subject codes, professors, and campus locations. It also provides filters for semester, language of instruction, and other relevant information to help students find the courses that fit their needs and preferences.
How we built it
We built our search engine using Elastic Search technology, which is known for its scalability and speed in handling large amounts of data. We used Python and JavaScript to develop the front-end and back-end, respectively. We also utilized various APIs and web scraping techniques to gather and update course data in real-time.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges we faced was ensuring that our search engine returned accurate and relevant results, especially considering the vast amount of course data available. We also had to deal with data inconsistencies and formatting issues that made it difficult to aggregate the information effectively.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the user-friendly interface and the speed and accuracy of our search engine. We also managed to implement various advanced features, such as auto-complete and filters, that improve the user experience.
What we learned
We learned a lot about data management, web scraping, and API integration during the development of this project. We also gained valuable experience in working with Elastic Search and using Python and JavaScript for web development.
What's next for Student Search Engine
Moving forward, we plan to expand the functionality of our search engine by incorporating additional features, such as a rating system for courses and the ability to save and compare subjects. We also aim to partner with UPC and other universities to make our search engine more widely available to students. Finally, we plan to continue updating and optimizing our search engine to ensure that it remains a valuable tool for students.
