Inspiration

Curious to see if local crime had an impact on student academic performance, allowing us to conjecture resources and measures the NYC government can utilize to improve academic performance

What it does

Utilizes NYC Department of Education Math and ELA Test Scores and Student Safety Reports to run machine learning analyses to extract information about crime on student test performance

How we built it

Cross referenced NYC Math and ELA Test Scores with Student Safety Reports and implemented Linear Regression, Decision Tree Regression, and Random Forest Regression

Challenges we ran into

Adjusting the data into a format that was ripe for statistical and machine learning analyses

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Navigating the data cleaning to build proper models to find actionable insights

What we learned

Geographical location (Latitude and Longitude) in New York City has the strongest effect on test performance

What's next for Student Safety and Academic Performance

Building off analysis to see how NYC Department of Education Student Survey Data can be used to further gain insight into how school safety impacts their academic performance; this will allow for recommendations on the policy making level
