Student Money Manager

Inspiration

Managing money is one of the biggest challenges students face today. Many students receive monthly allowances, scholarships, or part-time income but often struggle to track where their money goes. Small daily expenses such as food, transportation, subscriptions, and entertainment can quickly add up, making it difficult to save for future goals.

We were inspired by the idea of creating a simple yet intelligent financial companion that helps students develop responsible spending habits. Our goal was to make personal finance accessible, engaging, and easy to understand for young people who may have little financial knowledge.

What it does

Student Money Manager is an AI-powered personal finance application designed specifically for students.

The platform allows users to:

  • Track daily expenses and income
  • Categorize spending automatically
  • Monitor monthly budgets
  • Set and achieve savings goals
  • Receive smart spending insights
  • Get AI-powered budgeting recommendations
  • View financial reports and trends through interactive dashboards
  • Receive alerts when spending exceeds budget limits

By analyzing spending patterns, the application helps students understand their financial behavior and make better financial decisions.

How we built it

We developed the application using a modern full-stack architecture.

Frontend

  • React.js
  • Tailwind CSS
  • Chart.js for financial analytics dashboards

Backend

  • Node.js
  • Express.js

Database

  • MongoDB

AI Features

  • OpenAI API for personalized budgeting suggestions
  • Expense classification and spending analysis

Authentication

  • Firebase Authentication

Deployment

  • Vercel (Frontend)
  • Render / Railway (Backend)

The system collects expense data, stores it securely, analyzes spending behavior, and generates personalized recommendations using AI.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was creating meaningful financial recommendations rather than generic advice. Students have different spending habits, income levels, and savings goals, so we needed to design a system that could generate personalized insights.

Another challenge was categorizing expenses accurately and visualizing financial data in a simple and intuitive way. We spent significant time improving dashboard usability to ensure users could quickly understand their spending trends.

We also had to balance AI functionality with performance so that recommendations remained fast and relevant.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built a complete student-focused finance management platform
  • Successfully integrated AI-powered budgeting assistance
  • Created interactive spending analytics dashboards
  • Developed savings goal tracking features
  • Designed a user-friendly and responsive interface
  • Delivered a scalable architecture suitable for future expansion
