What Inspired Us
As university students, the pandemic has forced us to adapt to a new environment that is more stressful given all the circumstances. New stressors like making sure the assignment is submitted on time online and that students are attending class with the right meeting software with the right link is stressful and hard to organize when having different calendars. Also, with organizations meeting online, it is important that those are not forgotten either. What we aspire for is to alleviate some of that stress and provide an easier, streamlined method of keeping track of assignments and commitments, while also providing the Pomodoro technique to help students remain focused on finishing their tasks and commitments.
What It Does
What Organize4Me does is organize all online tasks, commitments between different meeting platforms and provide a technique for students to study. It is hard remaining focused enough to finish all the tasks alone, so we thought we should promote productivity by using the Pomodoro technique since based on our experience it has worked for us and we hope it works for others. We also have a text to speech feature that lets the students perform text to speech while completing their assignments.
How We Built It
Figma was used to prototype each page of the product. We mainly used HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to build the website. We used the Speech Synthesis API to build the text-to-speech feature.
Challenges We Ran Into
Almost no project is made without its challenges. A challenge we stumbled upon was setting up user authentication and creating a user database that stores all the assignments and calendars of each individual. We tried using both CockroachDB and mySQL, but we ran out of time. Hopefully, we can incorporate this in the next steps.
Accomplishments that We're Proud Of
What we are proud of is our ability to work together as a team and learn through this process together. It has been amazing to meld all of our ideas together of how to increase productivity since we have the shared experience of university life together. In 24 brief, hectic and productive hours, we have managed to create a product, a logo and develop as a team, and that is something that should not be ignored.
What We Learned
Our group has various levels of experience with coding and hacking, yet it still provided learning opportunities for all. In Stephanie's perspective, she experienced a crash course into the world of coding and how intricate and interconnected the coding process is. From Olutosin's perspective, he learned more about the front end of websites. Emily and Jonathan learned about CockroachDB and mySQL, but we have not incorporate that into our project yet. Something that most of the group learned about was Figma, a web design prototyping software that helped shape the aesthetics of our website for the user. We also learned about various tools that may be useful for what comes next for Organize4Me, possibly including reminders with Courier and using CockroachDB.
What's Next for Organize4Me
When originally starting the project, we debated whether we would create a mobile app or a desktop app for our users. Ultimately we decided on using a desktop app, but in the future we can develop it into a mobile app since many students use their phones to keep track of goals. As we have mentioned before, we could explore how to incorporate software like Courier and CockroachDB into our code. We would use Courier to send reminders to users about upcoming assignments and calendar events through Discord, and CockroachDB to set up a database with user assignments and events.
