Inspiration
Out inspiration for Student Budget Buddy was our goal to create an app to help address a problem our community faces. As many college students gain financial freedom and independence, they often lose track of their expenses and go over budget, causing great financial loss. The goal of student budget buddy is to help fellow college students keep track of their expenses, so they can be more financially aware and stable.
What it does
Student Budget Buddy starts off by using Google Authentication to create an account for the current user. By using this account, the app is able to store information across platforms for the current user, so they can access their budget anywhere.
How we built it
We built Student Budget Buddy using React and Firebase.
Challenges we ran into
Some challenges that we ran into came primarily with storing the data inside the Google Account so it could be accessible across platforms and would save the user's data.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are really proud of the Google Authenticator we added, as this was the most challenging yet rewarding and beneficial element for our application.
What we learned
We learned some new technologies, such as React and Firebase. We also learned how to design and plan out the workflow among our team, and how to effectively approach and overcome any little obstacles we faced. We also learned about the multitude of issues that developers face when implementing different services, like Google Authenticator, and how to overcome them.
What's next for Student Budget Buddy
Student Budget Buddy's journey is not over. We have many things planned, such as dividing the budget and expenses by month and year, which would allow the users to see a consolidated overview of their budget and expense from previous months. We also aim to add a category option to our expenses, which would allow users to choose which category the expense belongs to, for better organization and insight. Additionally, we have informational charts and graphs planned which would allow the users to see spending habits for different categories across a selected timeframe and would allow them to see if they are spending too much money on a specific category for that month compared to previous months.
