Inspiration
Many students struggle to find simple, personalized explanations for topics they don't understand, and don't always have access to a tutor. We wanted to build something that gives instant, easy-to-understand help — anytime, anywhere.
What it does
StudyBuddy is an AI-powered study companion that:
- Explains any topic in simple words (English or Roman Urdu)
- Generates a 5-question multiple-choice quiz on that topic
- Scores the quiz automatically so students can test their understanding
How we built it
We built a Node.js + Express backend that connects to the Groq API (Llama 3.3 70B model) to generate explanations and quizzes. The frontend is built with plain HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, with a simple form to enter a topic and toggle between English and Roman Urdu explanations.
Challenges we ran into
- Setting up CORS correctly between the frontend and backend
- Structuring AI prompts to reliably return clean, parseable HTML for the quiz
- Keeping the API key secure using environment variables instead of hardcoding it
What we learned
We learned how to integrate a third-party AI API into a full-stack web app, structure prompts for consistent AI output, and build a simple but functional student-facing tool under time constraints.
What's next for StudyBuddy
- Add more subjects and difficulty levels
- Save quiz history and track progress over time
- Add more language options beyond English and Roman Urdu
