What's next for StuddyBuddy SA
Inspiration
I'm Lungile, 18, from Ixopo, KZN, South Africa. I saw learners in my community struggling because school content is only in English, and data is expensive. I wanted to build StuddyBuddy SA - an AI tutor that explains lessons in Zulu and English for rural learners.
What it does
StuddyBuddy SA helps Grade 8-12 learners understand Maths, Science, and other subjects. It explains concepts in simple language, in Zulu or English, with low-data design for areas with limited connectivity.
How I built it
This is my first time building with AI! I used AI coding agents to plan and build a small, maintainable project:
- Started with a clear prompt: "Build a simple AI study buddy for SA learners"
- Used the agent to generate clean, modular code
- Focused on maintainability: small functions, clear comments
- Iterated with the agent: test, fix, improve
Challenges I faced
- Limited data and slow internet in Ixopo
- Learning to prompt the coding agent effectively
- Making the AI explain in Zulu correctly
- Keeping the project small and maintainable as a beginner
What I learned
- How to plan a project with an AI coding agent
- How to break a big idea into small maintainable parts
- Prompt engineering for better code
- That AI can help a learner from rural SA build for his community
What's next
Add voice support in Zulu, offline mode, and more CAPS subjects. My dream is to help every SA learner from Ixopo to the world.
