Inspiration

In Durban, SA students struggle with education that doesn't reflect their culture. A student who loves amapiano and soccer is forced to learn math with boring examples. We wanted to fix that. When we discovered Qloo API - which understands taste and culture - we saw a chance to make StuddyBuddy SA truly personal.

What it does

StuddyBuddy SA is an AI tutor that personalizes learning using Qloo API.

• Student says: "I love soccer, help me with fractions"
• Qloo verifies and enriches the taste profile (soccer, amapiano, TikTok, etc)
• Our AI explains fractions using soccer analogies: "1/2 is half the team with the ball"
• For a student who loves Amapiano: "Fractions are like drum beats - each small beat makes the full song"

It makes SA education relatable, from Durban to Jozi.

How we built it

• Frontend: Simple HTML/CSS/JS - mobile-first for SA learners
• Backend: Python Flask
• Qloo API: hackathon.api.qloo.com/v2/insights - we use signal.interests.tags to validate and enhance student interests, then map them to cultural analogies
• Logic: Flask route /api/learn takes subject + interest, calls Qloo to verify taste, then generates personalized explanation

Challenges we ran into

• Qloo API rate limits - solved with caching
• Making analogies culturally accurate for SA - we tested with friends in KZN
• Mobile data costs in SA - made app ultra-light (<50kb)
