Inspiration
In Durban, I watched my younger cousins struggle with math homework after school. No tutors, no data for YouTube, and most AI apps only speak perfect English. I wanted to build StuddyBuddy SA - a friend who explains math like a real South African teacher, in English and Zulu, now powered by voice with Alexa+.
In South Africa, 60% of learners don't have access to extra tutoring. I asked: What if you could just ask for help out loud?
What it does
StuddyBuddy SA is a voice-first AI study companion built for Alexa+:
- Voice Learning: Say "Alexa, ask StuddyBuddy to solve $2x + 5 = 15$" and get step-by-step explanation by voice
- Photo Solver: Snap a photo of any math problem, get instant solution
- Zulu & English: Explains in simple language, Zulu-friendly for KZN learners
- CAPS Aligned: Built for South African curriculum - Grade 8 to Matric
- PayPal Ready: Premium 1-on-1 tutor sessions via PayPal
Example: User: "Alexa, how do you solve $x^2 - 5x + 6 = 0$?" Alexa: "Let's factor it... we need two numbers that multiply to 6 and add to -5..."
How we built it
- Alexa+ Skill: Built Alexa Agent Skill using Alexa Skills Kit (ASK) + Alexa+ MCP Server to connect to our backend
- Frontend: React - mobile-first for low-end phones in SA
- Backend: Python + Flask on Render
- AI Core: OpenAI GPT-4o + PayPal AI SDK for reasoning
- Math Engine: SymPy for accurate solving, LaTeX for beautiful equations like $\frac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a}$
- OCR: Tesseract for handwritten homework
- Voice: Alexa Voice Services for Zulu/English TTS
Architecture: Alexa+ -> MCP Server -> Flask API -> AI Solver -> Voice Response
Challenges we ran into
- Building Alexa+ Agent that understands South African English accent and Zulu code-switching
- Making math explanations sound natural by voice, not like a textbook - had to rewrite prompts 20+ times
- Tesseract failing on handwritten math - trained custom preprocessing
- First time with Alexa Skills Kit and MCP - docs for Alexa+ are brand new
- Optimizing for low-data and load-shedding - app must work offline
- LaTeX rendering in Alexa voice response was tricky!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built first Zulu-friendly voice math tutor for Alexa+
- Working Alexa Skill that actually teaches, not just gives answers
- Successfully integrated Alexa+ MCP Server + PayPal AI in one project
- Works on R1500 phones - tested in Umlazi with real learners
- Submitted to both PayPal AI and Amazon Alexa+ tracks!
What we learned
- How to build for Alexa+ - Agent Skills, MCP Servers, and voice UX is totally different from chat
- Voice pedagogy: explaining $a^2 + b^2 = c^2$ by voice needs storytelling
- How to make AI accessible - simple Zulu + English beats perfect grammar
- PayPal AI + Alexa+ can work together for ed-tech monetization
- Build for SA context first, then scale
What's next for StuddyBuddy SA
- Full Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho voice packs for Alexa+
- Offline Alexa skill for rural areas with no internet
- Matric past papers database (2015-2025) with voice search
- Tutor marketplace - learners pay R20 per question via PayPal voice payment
- Partner with 10 schools in KZN by December 2026
- Launch on Alexa Skills Store SA
