Inspiration
Every year, hundreds of millions of tons of agricultural waste are generated worldwide. Much of this crop residue is burned, dumped, or left to decompose inefficiently—releasing greenhouse gases, degrading air quality, and wasting valuable biomass.
At the same time, industries across the globe are searching for sustainable raw materials for biofuels, packaging, composting, and circular manufacturing. The disconnect is universal: farmers lack access to fair markets for their waste, and industries lack efficient sourcing mechanisms.
StubbleX was inspired by a simple global question: What if AI could transform agricultural waste into a valuable resource—benefiting farmers, industries, and the planet at the same time?
What it does
StubbleX is an AI-powered sustainability marketplace that connects farmers with industrial buyers to convert agricultural waste into economic and environmental value.
The platform enables:
AI-driven identification of agricultural waste
Smart pricing recommendations for fair trade
Direct farmer-to-industry transactions
Environmental impact tracking to quantify sustainability benefits
StubbleX promotes a circular economy model where waste becomes a resource instead of a liability.
How we built it
StubbleX was built as a full-stack, scalable web platform with AI integrated into the user workflow:
Frontend: Next.js (React), TypeScript, Tailwind CSS
Backend: FastAPI microservices with RESTful APIs
AI & ML:
Image classification using TensorFlow and MobileNetV2
Smart pricing logic combining rule-based heuristics with regression-style prediction
System Design:
Dual dashboards for farmers and buyers
AI embedded directly into listing and discovery workflows
Deployment Approach:
Low-code AI infrastructure to automate training, inference, and scaling
The architecture was designed to support global adoption across regions and crop types.
⚠️ Challenges we ran into
Limited labeled datasets for diverse agricultural waste types → Designed a flexible AI pipeline that supports incremental learning and regional dataset expansion.
Pricing prediction without global historical market data → Built a dynamic pricing model using waste characteristics, quantity, and regional economic factors.
Designing for users with varying digital literacy levels → Simplified AI interactions into one-click workflows (upload → classify → list).
