Inspiration

During the fall 2021 semester, the friend group made a fun contest to participate in: Finding the chonkiest squirrel on campus.

Now that we are back in quarantine, stuck inside all day with no motivation to do exercise, we wondered if we could make a timer like in the app Forest to motivate us to work out.

Combine the two idea, and...

Welcome to Stronk Chonk!

In this game, the user has a mission of the utmost importance: taking care of Mr Chonky, the neighbourhood squirrel!

Spending time working out in real life is converted, in the game, as time spent gathering acorns. Therefore, the more time spent working out, the more acorns are gathered, and the chonkier the squirrel will become, providing it excellent protection for the harsh Canadian winter ahead.

How we built it

  • We made the app using Android Studio
  • Images were drawn in Krita
  • Communications on Discord

Challenges we ran into

36 hours is not a lot of time. Originally, the app was supposed to be a game involving a carnival high striker bell. Suffice to say: we did not have time for this.

And so, we implemented a basic stopwatch app on Android Studio... Which 3 of us had never used before. There were many headaches, many laughs.

The most challenging bits:

  • Pausing the stopwatch: Android's Chronometer does not have a pre-existing pause function
  • Layout: We wanted to make it look pretty we did not have time to make every page pretty (but the home page looks very neat)
  • Syncing: The buttons were a mess and a half, data across different pages of the app are not synced yet

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Making the stopwatch work (thanks Niels!)
  • Animating the squirrel
  • The splash art
  • The art in general (huge props to Angela and Aigiarn)

What we learned

  • Most team members used Android Studio for the first time
  • This was half of the team's first hackathon
  • Niels and Ojetta are now annoyingly familiar with Android's Chronometer function
  • Niels and Angela can now navigate the Android Studio Layout functions like pros!
  • All team members are now aware they might be somewhat squirrel-obsessed

  • Syncing data across all pages
  • Adding the game element: High Striker Squirrel
