About
Stroke Detector is designed to help with the rapid detection of strokes in real time using a mobile iOS application, and getting individuals suffering from a stroke the help they need, on time.
Stroke is the third leading cause of death in Canada, and more than 62,000 strokes occur each year. It is also a leading cause of serious long-term disability and reduces mobility in more than half of stroke survivors age 65 and older. Yet, in one survey, only 38% were aware of all major symptoms and knew to call 9-1-1 when someone was having a stroke. This is concerning, as early action is vital when it comes to stroke treatment. Patients who arrive at the emergency room within 3 hours of their first symptoms often have less disability 3 months after a stroke than those who received delayed care.
Our app attempts to address this issue by allowing for users who are unsure if they are having symptoms of stroke to get immediate confirmation. Based on the F in the FAST (Face, Arms, Speech, Time) acronym for stroke detection, Stroke Detector uses a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) trained on a dataset of 3770 images to quickly and accurately analyze a user’s face to detect any visual signs of stroke.
