Inspiration
I was thinking of pins on a bulletin board, yarn, and then I made stringwords!
What it does
In stringwords, the player pulls a string out of a letter peg, making it the first letter in the word. Then, the string is draped and looped around other pegs each letter touched being added to the word. The goal is to race to find 10 words that are each longer than 4 words.
Users can create their own challenges alongside the Daily board. 1st place players can choose to share their game replay. Stringwords also has a streak system, encouraging users to come back every day!
How we built it
Typescript for all logic, canvas 2D for game board & rope physics, HTML & CSS for UI, with the Google Material Symbols iconset.
Challenges we ran into
- Getting the rope physics right took a lot of time
- Building the seeded board generation also faced a challenge.
- Creating deterministic physics for replays
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Getting the core game function to work
- Making the replays feature
- Adding cross-platform support so the game works on multiple platforms.
What we learned
I've taught myself a lot about UI during this project, considering how to make everything look nice.
What's next for Stringwords
Further updates are coming to Stringwords after the hackathon.
