Inspiration
[Strift] was inspired by the success of Instagram thrift stores and small businesses that sell through DMs on the platform, despite the lack of a dedicated e-commerce infrastructure. We saw an opportunity to create a beauty-first social commerce platform that provides small businesses with a powerful yet easy-to-use platform to connect with their audience, sell their products, and handle their shipping and logistics.
What it does
[Strift] is a robust social commerce platform that leverages the best features of social media and e-commerce to help small fashion and beauty businesses succeed. We offer seamless product discovery, easy checkout, and shipping and logistics support. Our platform also includes AI and ML-powered recommendation systems, payment processing, and a pre-registration waitlist that has onboarded 50+ local fashion and beauty brands.
How we built it
We built [Strift] using the latest web and app technologies, including Flutter for the app and Next.js for the web. We integrated AI and ML technologies for our recommendation systems and payment processing, including integration with popular payment processors like Razorpay. We are also working on our own payment processor to improve the payment experience for our users.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges we faced was creating a platform that was accessible and useful to small businesses of all scales. We also needed to handle shipping and logistics seamlessly to ensure that our vendors and end customers had a positive experience. Finally, we had to develop the platform on a tight budget, so we had to be innovative and resourceful in our approach.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have won the Hult Prize OnCampus round and moved into Hult National Quaterfinals in the fashion theme this year. We also designed and tested a mostly working MVP and received valuable feedback from users. Finally, we secured incubation for our project at Times' Group-backed Bennett Hatchery Incubator and onboarded more than 50 local fashion and beauty brands on our pre-registration waitlist in the past month.
What we learned
Through our research and development, we discovered the potential of the Indian beauty and fashion market and how big its market is. We also realized how fast fashion is rising and how important thrift stores are in promoting circular fashion approaches. Finally, we learned the importance of building accessible, user-friendly platforms that can be used by small businesses of all scales.
What's next for [strift]
We are excited to be working on [Strift] Swap, a fashion subscription service that offers circular fashion in a box. Customers can select their favorite pieces, have them delivered to their doorstep, wear them for a month, and swap them out for a new collection the following month. We also plan to expand our platform to offer additional features and support for small businesses, including improved payment processing and shipping options. Our ultimate goal is to become the go-to platform for small fashion and beauty businesses to succeed and grow.
