What it does

STRIDE is a service that is set up to work within the Georgia Department of Education public school system. It connects students that are commonly overlooked within the system. Students like 1st generation students who can't ask their parents for help in school because their parents have never had to navigate the confusing process that is the public school system. STRIDE is a team of counselors that identify students that may run into similar issues such as that and create connections with them to guide them through the process. STRIDE is different from a regular counselor because STRIDE counselors come from the same background as the students they serve, so they can relate to their specific situation.

How we built it

We created an entire program that could work within the Ga DoE. Then to explain the need and solution we crafted a video and presentation outlining the STRIDE program.

Challenges we ran into

It is always good to set timeframes and estimations on how long parts of the workflow will take, however we had found that it often took more hours than we anticipated to create the highest possible quality product.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Honestly the entire thing. We meshed very well together and really built off each other's ideas during brainstorming to have strong knowledge about the situation. Then moving into development we all played to our strengths and worked simultaneously to create the huge number of designs we produced.

What we learned

We learned a lot of information about our public school system in Georgia when searching for all of the necessary background to find the best problem for us to tackle limiting Georgia students from developing an interest in computer science.

What's next for STRIDE

STRIDE would need funding just as any other program would. Thankfully there are many philanthropic resources that are already giving to programs like STRIDE that are dedicated to lowering educational barriers for students. We could also want to present to the Ga Board of Education to see what other steps would need to be in place to make STRIDE a realization.
