Inspiration
It can be intimidating to start a fitness journey or to start committing to outdoor activities as a beginner. With thousands of resources and opinions, how can users get personalized recommendations for their active gear, and stay motivated and committed to their health and wellness? We wanted to create an app that not only encourages users to get outside, but to get outside with their friends and family as well, with the proper apparel!
What it does
Takes into account your outdoor activity, the weather based on a given location (or your current location!), and the intensity of the activity to provide you with suitable equipment and apparel recommendations.
Incentivizes users to participate in outdoor activities together and using high-quality products such as Arc’teryx while doing so by offering a reward system: Users get points for taking photos where they participate in outdoor activities. Bonus Points are rewarded when users wear our sponsor’s products and/or when they take photos with a friend!
How we built it
Front-End: HTML, Tailwind CSS, Javascript Back-End: Python with Flask, utilizing OpenAI API and OpenWeather API
Challenges we ran into
We do not have the computer vision technology necessary to verify whether photos were taken outside, with friends, or with Arc'teryx products yet, so we were not able to implement that key feature in 24 hours.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We implemented a feature where when users enable location, Stride will take into account the weather conditions in the location along with other factors to give a personalized recommendation of apparel and equipment using AI.
What's next for Stride
The main feature we'd like to focus on is finding a way to train AI to verify whether users are outside in their photos, and whether they are in the location they planned to go on a trip to. We could use geotracking with a company such as GeoComply, to prevent user fraud and abuse of the points system.
To create a seamless customer experience, we'd sync their history of recommendations and history of photo submissions across devices for them to retrieve their progress via an account. It could even be synced with Arc'teryx's existing user accounts, to create a smoother, localized experience for the loyalty program.
To keep our minimum viable product simple, we focused on recommending clothing for outdoor excursions. However, to further promote health, wellness, and streamline the experience from preparing to enjoying an outdoor trip, we’d love to include nutrition recommendations as well! It is so important to fuel properly for exercise, especially on strenuous, hot or extended trips. Unfortunately, inexperienced hikers fail to pack and fuel properly too often, leading to poorer performance, earlier fatigue, and even trips to the ER. Stride’s quick and easy way of educating and preparing will allow for more users to experience fun and safe trips while being nourished properly.
We’d love to improve Stride’s online presence - there is ample room for growth in the social media sector, and we can see its power from a previous TikTok trend of Gen Z showering in Arc’teryx apparel. We’d do this by implementing ‘Stride Wrapped’, a feature that replicates Spotify Wrapped, except with users’ outdoor excursions to summarize their year and showcase their growth.
Users could easily turn this into reels or short-form content, whether they utilize our Wrapped feature or grab their past photos and create fun edits to trendy songs.
Additionally, we’d continue to foster community by including a leaderboard feature that would allow friends to see how many points they have compared to one another, motivating them to go outside more or even go outside together to collect more points each week!
