Inspiration for STRI 😀
Living in Malaysia for over 9 years now, we have encountered cases of Malayan Tapir roadkill in our surrounding neighbourhood. Moved by their plight, we have decided to code and develop STRI - Stop Tapir Roadkill Initiative to inform the people, eco-awaken them, and protect these gentle creatures from further roadkill incidents.
What does STRI do? 🤔
STRI gives a brief introduction of the Malayan Tapir, and provides concise information (Reason for their roadkill and consequences) and statistics describing its roadkill incidents. Suggestions have been proposed to the government and civilians. A unique prototype (Artificially intelligent Tapir crossing sign) designed by Team SRP, using Teachable Machine and the Scratch Framework, has also been embedded in the website to better educate the audience. Our website is also accessible to the visually challenged due to the addition of an API named UserWay. It encompasses many features, such as screen reader, contrast changer, and a dyslexia font switcher. The website is responsive, making it viewable on a variety of devices, each having their own different dimensions.
How did we build it? 👷
We have build it using the 3 native web development languages: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. We have created and embedded a Scratch animation and also called an API from UserWay. We have used Microsoft's famous code editor: Visual Studio Code.
What challenges did we run into? 🚨
There were many technical glitches when:
- Playing with the multiple JavaScript libraries
- Adjusting the size and resolution of images / videos
- Aligning components when made responsive
- Embedding the Scratch prototype into the website
What are we proud of? 😁
We are happy of its responsiveness, user-friendliness, ability to cater for visually challenged people, efficiency in raising awareness concerning the Malayan Tapir roadkill, and our unique solution developed using the Scratch framework.
What have we learned? 🧑🏫
- Teamwork
- Time management
- Technical knowledge
- Animal misfortunes worldwide
- Work efficiency
What's the future for our STRI website? 🔮
We will be implementing the misery of other animal roadkill worldwide, in addition to the Malayan Tapir. A backend will also be incorporated, making the website more dynamic and enabling the presence of user-interactive sections. We will also work towards making our unique prototype, a digitally intelligent crossing sign, a reality, and raise more awareness to the commuters.
