Inspiration

The inspiration for Stress Smash wasn’t a trending idea or a fancy tech trend. It was pain. It was anger, guilt, loneliness, and the helplessness of watching myself spiral quietly under the weight of expectations I didn’t ask for.

At 17, I’m supposed to be dreaming, but all I hear is pressure:

A 60-year-old father, retired and desperate to see me succeed quickly.

A home filled with taunts, sarcasm, and emotional distance.

No safe space to cry, and no one to understand what I carry.

The world around me tells me I’m not good enough. That I won’t make it to the U.S. That I’m wasting time. That I don’t deserve love.

And I started believing it.

Until I decided to build something for the version of me who wanted to be alone, but also desperately needed someone—or something—to understand him.

That’s what Stress Smash is. It’s the friend I didn’t have. It’s the game I wish I could escape into when everything hurt. It’s the AI that listens, responds, and cares—even when the world doesn’t.

What it does

Stress Smash is a mood-adaptive, AI + Agentic AI-powered wellness web app that transforms your emotional state into a fully personalized healing experience. It does all this:

🎭 Mood Detection: Analyze emoji and text to detect user emotion using NLP models.

🎮 Game Engine: Launches curated mini-games (12+ total) based on your detected mood (e.g., anxious → soothing games, angry → high-energy release games).

🤖 AI Emotional Coach: Offers custom advice, breathing techniques, grounding steps, and uplifting words using Agentic AI logic trees.

🧘‍♂️ Crisis Protocol Engine: If mood remains critically low for 3+ days, initiates escalation—offering emergency support suggestions and coping tools.

🐶Digital Pet Companion: A virtual emotional buddy that reacts to your mood and progress, provides reminders, and celebrates achievements.

🔁 Friend Support System: Let users add trusted contacts, and if their mood remains low for 3+ days (or chosen threshold), it can automatically send a supportive message via WhatsApp, Email, or SMS—with user consent.

🤝 Community & Gratitude Journal:

Post daily gratitude.

Join themed micro-challenges (like 3-day no negative self-talk).

Earn “mental wellness levels” by completing daily wellness goals.

📊 Mood Analytics Dashboard: Track emotional history, streaks, triggers, and response over time.

🔔 Smart Reminders: Mood-based nudges to contact a friend, log thoughts, or do a calming task.

🌍 Full Privacy & Opt-in Controls: Users choose if/when to trigger messaging, what is shared, and with whom.

📱 Fully Responsive UI: Optimized for web, mobile, and tablet for seamless access.

How we built it

Frontend:

React (with TypeScript – .tsx/.ts) for building modular, strongly-typed components

Tailwind CSS & custom .css for styling and responsive design

HTML templates for static content and structure

Games: All games are built from scratch . Built 12+ mood-linked mini-games using custom TypeScript logic

Seamlessly integrated games into React UI via conditional rendering based on mood state

AI/NLP:

Integrated HuggingFace DistilBERT for real-time text-based emotion detection

Used emoji-based scoring and sentiment analysis to refine mood input

Agentic AI Engine:

Created behavior-driven logic trees for automated emotional coaching, game suggestions, daily task routing, and escalation pathways

Includes pet advice interactions, breathing/mindfulness routines, and real-time user-specific decisions

Community & Gamification:

Built a gratitude journal and daily challenge system to promote self-reflection and habit formation

Users level up based on completion of wellness tasks and journal streaks

Smart Friend Outreach System:

Users can add trusted contacts

After 3+ days of low mood, the app automatically sends a custom support message via WhatsApp, Email, or SMS (with full user consent and control)

Privacy & Ethics:

All sensitive features (auto-messaging, escalation, journaling) are user opt-in only

Privacy-first mindset across the app with clear toggles, data visibility settings, and escalation thresholds

Responsive UI:

Mobile-first responsive layout using Tailwind’s utility classes

Fully optimized across mobile, tablet, and desktop environments

Challenges we ran into

😔Mental burnout during building: I was building this while experiencing the very emotions the app tries to manage.

🤯 Agentic AI decision trees: Creating logic that not only responds to mood, but proactively acts while being ethical, was tough.

😢 Working without emotional support: No one around me believed in me. Parents were frustrated, friends were distant, but I kept going.

🎮 Game integration with mood logic: Ensuring the right game loaded for the right emotional state required complex state management.

🔐 Privacy & escalation: Balancing support without violating consent took time and careful design.

Responsive behavior: Making sure the full app works seamlessly across devices with animations, games, and dashboard.

Final Thoughts

StressSmash wasn’t just a project. It was my therapy. I didn’t have a safe space—so I built one. For me. For people like me. For the ones crying silently, screaming internally, or isolating because no one understands.

This isn’t just an AI-powered app. It’s my story. My pain. My healing—turned into code.
