Inspiration

Dallas is experiencing an increase in homelessness and unsheltered homeless. Many of those who live, work or visit Dallas have noticed this and the associated impacts to the Dallas community.

We want to change the perception and discussion of homelessness in Dallas to remind people that homelessness is a community issue and that there is a great way to learn and help them.

What it does

Street Portraits provides a catalog of homeless people's stories so you can read about and support them. We will also provide them a graphically updated street sign to help solicit donations and include them a link for folks to look up.

We will like to provide a well designed poster to solicit donations and provide an opportunity for folks to find their link.

How we built it

We used Phoenix web framework and postgresSQL

We’ve built a CMS to create and tell stories on behalf of the homeless community, as well as an outreach system and CRM for browsers to offer help and support. Through the CRM we are able to connect people who want to help with our catalog of community members in need.

Challenges we ran into

Startup issues, human error (spilling drinks on computers). Learning Phoenix web framework.

What we learned

Phoenix is awesome! Homelessness is a growing in the city of Dallas! It has increased by 9%. We feel as local community members that it is important to give back and support the homelessness.
