Inspiration:
During the brainstorming process we produced a variety of amazing ideas. We made an effort to come up with concepts for products that consider different ways to implement safety-related features that can potentially improve people’s lives. Our goal was to help first-time visitors stay safe by giving them up-to-date information to help them avoid potentially dangerous areas in different cities across Ontario. Finally, we wanted to incorporate community feedback regarding dangerous zones along with travel advisory features.
What it does:
StreetSmart offers official information for travellers arriving to Canada. It fosters a community that cares about tourists' welfare. The target audience for our website are individuals who prioritize cultural immersion, adventure, and interacting with locals while exploring the city. StreetSmart addresses the difficulties first-time visitors face in our country due to the risk of unknowingly landing in a dangerous area. For instance, people can have the potential to learn about safety in various city neighbourhoods to avoid landing in risky areas within a city.
How we built it:
We used Figma to build our prototype and we have a website preview link here: link To access our responsive prototype, the link here: link We also tried to implement the use of official government API to collect data about each city, API for Google Maps to have access to maps of the city.
Challenges we ran into:
We hope to further develop our website and develop a more sophisticated App version for mobile devices to allow users to have a better user experience. This was our first hackathon, and our team consists of front-end developers and UI/UX designers who used this experience to hone their code and design skills using react and Figma. However, us being stronger in the front-end posed difficulties in the back-end. For instance, we had trouble configuring Git repositories.
Accomplishments that we're proud of:
We take pride on how quickly we developed an innovative website idea, a prototype, and tried to code our prototype, which allowed us to hone our skill sets. Prior to this, our team members had not taken part in a hackathon before. We are proud of the progress we have made in bringing an idea from conception to completion.
What we learned:
We learned how to overcome obstacles throughout the development phase of this project while exploring ways to collaborate with our individual strengths and improving our coding skills.
What's next for Street Smart:
- We hope to further develop our website by fully implementing travel advisory integration beyond Ontario.
- We would like to improve our code to ensure our users' city rating reports are accurate and reliable.
- We want to create an app version of our website to enhance user-experience on mobile devices.
- We hope to create a case study worth showcasing in our portfolios.
