Inspiration
We are driven by the desire to address a public crisis, homelessness. Our project aims to find solutions that empower these marginalized individuals and communities while encouraging them to fight for a brighter tomorrow.
What it does
Our platform, which we have called "Street Hire" is an online tool that allows employers to post job opportunities specifically for homeless individuals, and for them to apply for those small tasks.
How we built it
These are the technologies and languages that were used. Front-end: HTML, CSS, Figma. Back-end: JS and Django.
Challenges we ran into
These are some of the challenges we struggled with: How would the homeless and the employer connect?: This Was a question we had to think long and hard to answer, until we reached the conclusion that the best way to go would be with an intermediary, like a shelter or institution to filter through the candidates and contact us afterward. Responsive Design & Styling: Rev and Kartavya initially set the resolution to widescreen in Figma, only to later find out that it wouldn't work properly on some devices, since it was not responsive and several elements moved. The best solution we came up with was changing CSS styling, like padding and margin. Django linking: Natalie struggled to try to figure out how to get the images that were imported within the playground folder to work and she wasn't familiar with HTML, so looking at the HTML code didn't help. After researching she realized there was a specific way you need to redefine the src for these images. After changing the src sections for the image they ended up working.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to share with you a platform that we hope will remove some of the barriers that come across working for the homeless, as well as creating better lives and contributing towards a better society.
What we learned
It was the first time for the three of us to be working on a website from scratch. We definitely faced way more challenges than we thought we would, and this shows how much work there actually is behind websites, which a lot of people underestimate. As a team, we learned how to get through these issues by communicating properly and researching different websites and resources to work towards the best possible outcome. Props to mentor yawna on Discord for her support through our journey.
What's next for Street Hire
Here at Street Hire our vision is not just to better the living standard of the homeless but to develop the society we live in. In the future, we will add a performance based reward system, as well as workshops and skills courses, to level up our candidates' abilities and prospects for life.
