The Inspiration (The Problem) Amazon’s recent transition from the Android-based Fire OS to the proprietary, Linux-based Vega OS has created a massive "App Gap." While major platforms like Disney and Netflix can afford to rebuild their apps for Vega, thousands of regional and niche streaming networks are suddenly obsolete on new Fire TVs. They lack the engineering budget to rewrite their Kotlin/Java codebases into the new VPKG format.

What It Does (The Solution) StreamShift is a B2B Universal Streaming Hub and Migration-as-a-Service (MaaS) platform. It allows regional networks to plug their existing video feeds into a unified master TV guide, completely shielding the viewer from the missing app error.

Master Search: Users browse an aggregated catalog of movies and shows across multiple networks via a single interface.

Direct Hand-off: If a movie belongs to a major network with a native Vega app, StreamShift deep-links directly to it.

The Safety Net Player: If a movie belongs to a regional network without a Vega app, StreamShift seamlessly intercepts the click and plays the HLS video stream natively inside a highly-optimized built-in fallback player.

How We Built It (The Tech Stack)

Frontend (Vega OS Client): Built with React Native and react-native-tvos to handle spatial D-pad navigation (FocusGuide) and ensure a lightweight footprint on low-memory TV hardware.

Backend & Routing: Powered by a high-performance Python FastAPI engine and a MySQL database to handle lightning-fast catalog search, metadata ingestion, and the routing logic that decides whether to deep-link or use the fallback player.

Video Infrastructure: Integrated customized wrappers around Shaka Player and react-native-video to handle seamless HLS video playback natively on the Linux-based OS.

Challenges & Pivots Developing for a television screen required complex spatial logic because touchscreens do not exist; ensuring users did not get "stuck" navigating the UI grid with a D-pad remote required heavy optimization. Furthermore, to avoid illegal DRM bypassing and piracy traps that hackathon judges heavily scrutinize, the project was strategically designed as an opt-in B2B aggregation platform rather than a consumer web-scraper, establishing a legal and highly scalable SaaS business model.
