Inspiration
Inspiration
Twitch chat moves fast, and most viewers only watch it scroll. StreamPulse turns that chat into something viewers can play, with a quiz and a shared challenge, without leaving the stream.
What it does
- Live chat quiz: the streamer builds a multiple-choice question in the Studio page. Viewers answer in Twitch chat (A, B or C). The server counts each viewer's first valid answer and scores it from 100 to 1000 points by the time the server receives it.
- Community challenge: viewers type a command such as !cheer to push a shared goal. When the goal is reached, every contributor earns bonus points.
- Overlay: shows the question, answer reveal, challenge progress, rewards and a leaderboard. It works as an OBS browser source and there is a /demo page with Twitch chat and the overlay side by side.
- Reads real Twitch chat anonymously, with no developer keys needed.
How we built it
StreamPulse was built in a Codex cloud thread. Codex wrote the Node.js and Express server, the session state machine, scoring and timers, the Studio page, the overlay, the tests and the documentation. Codex ran its own tests: 24 tests, 23 passed, 0 failed, 1 skipped (the optional MongoDB integration test). The code is on the work branch of the GitHub repository. Codex thread ID: 01a19c05-4757-71e2-8919-60472d0c609c
Challenges we ran into
- The Codex cloud could not reach live Twitch chat (it got HTTP 403), so the live test had to be done on a laptop with real Twitch chat.
- Twitch rejects identical chat messages sent close together, so the demo needed care with the test messages.
- The demo ran in memory mode. MongoDB persistence is implemented and tested in code, but it was not connected in the demo.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
A full run on a real Twitch channel with no simulator: a quiz answer counted and scored, the correct answer revealed, a community challenge reaching its goal, and a leaderboard.
What we learned
How to build a real-time chat product with Codex, and how much server-side scoring and timers matter for fairness in live chat.
Note: the narration in the demo video is AI-generated. A chat simulator exists for development only and was not used in the video.
