Inspiration

We want to make a project that promotes non-profits through an interactable game, inspired by VOKRA and the SPCA’s rescue program. Celeste, the t-rex Chrome game, and One-Shot were our inspiration for the actual game and how it works.

What it does

Our project most closely resembles an interactive ad, in which people control a stray cat that is trying to find warmth and shelter. The idea is to have people grow attached to the game character, as well as raise awareness of the actual situations strays live in every day, and therefore be more inspired to donate and help real-life animals.

How we built it

We used Godot to create the functionality of the game, and Gimp to create the game assets. In addition, we found some free music online to run in the background.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was in integrating the reality of stray cats into a game environment, while keeping it light-hearted and fun. The main adversary we decided on was the environment, creating a cold counter that would slowly freeze the main character to death if heat was not found. This showcased one of the toughest challenges for stray animals on the streets. The cold meter mechanic was also a very difficult hurdle we had to overcome as it was a core aspect of our game that just would not function properly. We did get it running but the vast majority of our time spent programming was to complete the working cold meter.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re really proud of creating all the artistic assets from scratch in under a day, as well as hard-coding a lot of the more difficult game aspects, such as the cold counter. Completing the development of the planned game within our given time restraint was what we were the most pleased with.

What we learned

We learned how to work as a team, push and pull commits on GitHub, and gained experience in creating solutions to real-life problems. Our ability to program with GD script has never been better, learning different nodes and sprite sheet implementation will likely be skill we continue to retain in the far future.

What's next for Strays

The next step is to scale up the game so it has more interactable elements that promote the animal rescue of choice, and to alter it so it can be applied to any rescue organization.
