Inspiration
We wanted a beautiful way to visualize weather indoors.
What it does
Stratus displays various types of weather (rainy, sunny, cloudy, thunderstorms). Our Stratus can be controlled using UI designed using javascript and incorporated simpleWeatherJS.
How we built it
We built the actual product using a raspberry pi, clear plastic container, and cardboard. We created a UI using html, css, and javascript in order to control what weather wanted to display. We used LED lights to display sun/lightning, a water pump to simulate rain, and a mister to simulate clouds.
Challenges we ran into
Time crunch, setting up the network connections at the hack. We didn't have optimal parts, we only have a blue led light. There were leaks in our final prototype.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We learned several new skills and built a working prototype. First time at a hackathon!
What we learned
Work in more front end and javascript, implementing/pulling data from web APIs, writing PHP scripts in raspberry pi and utilizing apache server.
What's next for Stratos
Things to add: Hydrophobic coating, improved enclosure, and RGB LED. I think we can work on the design so nothing leaks and we can recycle the water vapor.
