Inspiration
Strategic planning tools are often flat, spreadsheet-like interfaces that do not convey the scale or relationships of complex goals.
What it does
Strategic Planner will provide an immersive, local-first desktop workspace where people can arrange and navigate strategy as a 3D visual landscape rather than a list of records.
How we built it
It is a node.js application that was built using the OpenSpec workflow and Codex GPT 5.6 models. I used the Codex extension in VS Code. Electron and Three.js were the key technologies used for the interface.
Challenges we ran into
There were no real challenges in the creation of this tool. The hardest part was knowing which GPT 5.6 model to use, given limited experience with the new models. The model choice impacts usage and turnaround time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I was able to whip this together in short time, with very few iterations. The output matched the vision quite early, which enable me to add improvements to the feature set. Got the hang of the Codex models pretty quickly and was able to use appropriate intelligence depending on the task complexity and OpenSpec stage.
What we learned
It was clear that Codex was able to power through this task. I have a clear idea of what Codex can achieve and how to manage the session, commands and skills within the VS Code extension.
What's next for Strategic Planner
Once I use it a bit myself, I plan to open source the project so people can easily access a 3D strategy and planning tool.
