Inspiration

FreshServe Ltd. was founded by Ahmed Malik, who grew up seeing the struggles of food deserts in his own neighborhood. This personal connection fueled a mission to provide affordable, fresh meal kits to low-income urban areas, combating food insecurity. Our strategic plan reflects this passion, aiming to ensure FreshServe not only survives but thrives as a sustainable solution for underserved communities.

What it does

FreshServe Ltd. delivers affordable, fresh meal kits to urban food deserts, addressing the lack of access to nutritious food. We source ingredients from local farmers and assemble kits in urban kitchens to ensure quality and affordability. The strategic plan strengthens this mission by improving financial stability, streamlining operations, boosting employee morale, and enhancing customer satisfaction, allowing us to keep making a positive impact on diets and community well-being.

How we built it

We crafted this strategic plan using the Balanced Scorecard framework, which helped us balance financial, operational, employee, and customer perspectives. We analyzed financial data, production processes, community surveys, and employee feedback to address key issues like high debt, supply chain disruptions, low morale, and customer concerns. External research on supply chain resilience and debt management also shaped our structured, data-driven approach to sustainable growth.

Challenges we ran into

We encountered several obstacles:

  • Financial strain: A high gearing ratio of 70% indicated significant debt risk.
  • Supply chain issues: Disruptions and rising ingredient costs threatened our ability to keep prices low.
  • Employee morale: Top-down leadership and lean production pressures led to dissatisfaction.
  • Customer feedback: Users reported issues with recipe clarity and portion sizes, which we needed to fix to maintain trust and impact.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of FreshServe’s measurable impact: 90% of users report improved diets, and 85% find our meal kits more affordable than traditional groceries. Our strategic plan builds on this success by tackling challenges head-on while staying aligned with our mission. We’ve developed a balanced approach that ensures financial health, operational efficiency, employee engagement, and customer satisfaction—setting us up for long-term success.

What we learned

We discovered that sustainable growth demands a holistic approach—balancing financial stability with operational improvements, employee well-being, and customer needs. Engaging employees drives innovation, while listening to customers improves retention. We also learned that tools like predictive inventory management can cut costs and waste, helping us keep meal kits affordable for the communities we serve.

What's next for Strategic Plan for FreshServe Ltd

Our plan unfolds in three phases:

Phase 1 (Years 1–2): Stabilize finances with grants and cost controls, improve operations with better inventory tools, and lift employee morale through leadership training. Phase 2 (Years 3–4): Enhance the customer experience with a mobile app, loyalty programs, and customizable meal plans, while further refining operations. Phase 3 (Year 5): Expand into new urban food deserts and diversify our offerings, ensuring FreshServe’s mission grows sustainably.

This roadmap keeps us focused on our goal: eliminating food insecurity one meal kit at a time.
