Inspiration

We wanted to create a web based game that would perfectly represent our love for oranges and well, memes. Additionally, we wanted to relive the nostalgia from the original whack-a-mole game.

What it does

Strange Orange is a fun browser game that lets you destroy the oranges before liz’s mum makes her eat them within the 15 second timer. Every time you manage to smash an orange, you make liz happy and well, earn some points.

How we built it

We built the game using vanilla javascript and css. For the leaderboard, we used database services by datastax and netlify for serving the cloud functions.

Challenges we ran into

A couple of them. For starters, figuring out astra db as a first timer was a bit intimidating. Also, one of our teammates had to juggle between exams and the project, which was tough.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we could make a fun project within the time constraints and learn useful things about datastax which is definitely going to help us with future projects.

What we learned

We learnt about making browser games in javascript. We also learnt about serverless functions and databases.

What's next for Strange Orange

We want to implement multi player functionalities to make it more engaging. So, our next step would be to add sockets and explore more capabilities of astra db.
