Inspiration

The inspiration for str00p.io is the Stroop effect. We wanted to make something fun and engaging, while educational and stimulating. So we decided that a simple game would be fun to make for HackED 2026.

What it does

str00p.io is a game that challenges brain processing between conflicting information. The player must select the color of the text without being confused by what the text says.

How we built it

We built our application using the next.js framework. Because our game didn't require complicated logic or rendering, using react instead of a game engine made sense, as it allowed us to use our existing knowledge base and save time that would be spent learning new tools.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges we had was being rusty with the tech stack we ended up using. It involved a lot of research which ultimately helped each of us. We all left the project knowing more than we did going in. The start was a bit rough and we had to restart however we got it functional in the end. Challenges from the project itself include lining up the progress bar with the countdown, as well as trying to convert the styling over from our first attempt onto our second.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have created a functional and stylish application in such a short amount of time. We are particularly proud of it's styling and presentation, as a great deal of effort was put in to making the app look as nice as possible.

What we learned

We learned a lot about quick communication and organization. Being able to quickly plan and prototype was essential to successful development in such a short time frame, and preventing merge conflicts without traditional GitHub branch protection required good communication.

What's next for str00p.io

In our current version, there's two modes that are pretty similar. In our plan, we wanted to make one of the modes get progressively harder every 6 questions the user got correct. Right now there is only one aspect to make things harder. In the future, we plan to implement the harder versions of the game we thought up.
