Inspiration

The idea for StoryVerse came from noticing that while platforms like Wattpad and Medium allow writers to share stories, very few give tangible recognition to writers. We wanted to create a space where anyone, regardless of background, can write and see their creativity validated by the community.

Our vision was to blend the short-form creativity and engagement of TikTok with the depth of storytelling and publishing giving everyday storytellers a chance to shine.

What it does

Writers can submit short stories, poems, or chapters. Readers engage through likes, comments, and reactions (🔥, 😂, 😭). Each month, the top-voted story gets published into a digital and/or printed anthology. Over time, StoryVerse builds a community-driven library of diverse voices. Gamification elements like points, leaderboards, and badges keep readers and writers engaged.

How we built it

Frontend: Built with React + TailwindCSS for a clean, responsive interface. Backend: Node.js + Express for APIs, with MongoDB for storing stories, users, and votes. Engagement System: Ranking algorithms based on weighted engagement (likes, comments, reads). Score=(𝑤1×Likes)+(𝑤2×Comments)+(3×Reads)Score=(w1×Likes)+(w2×Comments)+(w3×Reads) Publishing Pipeline: Top stories are compiled into a monthly eBook (PDF/EPUB) with optional print-on-demand integration. AI Tools: Used for optional cover art generation and auto-formatting stories into publish-ready layouts.

Challenges we ran into

Designing a fair ranking system that balances likes and genuine readership. Handling moderation: filtering spam, plagiarism, and inappropriate content. Automating book publishing workflows (layout, formatting, cover generation). Encouraging early user engagement when the platform is still growing.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Built a working prototype that allows full story submission and voting. Created a monthly anthology system, turning digital stories into real books. Designed an AI-assisted creative flow: writers get cover art instantly. Fostered a community-first vision, where readers and writers collaborate.

What we learned

The power of community-driven creativity people love to read and vote when they feel part of the outcome. Importance of UX in storytelling platforms: clean layouts matter for both writing and reading. How to integrate AI tools meaningfully without replacing human creativity. Balancing gamification so it motivates without overshadowing genuine storytelling.

What's next for StoryVerse

Expand to mobile apps for easier access and wider reach. Add multimedia stories (audio narration, background music). Introduce writer mentorships & workshops for skill growth. Build translation tools to let stories travel across languages. Partner with indie publishers to bring the best anthologies to bookstores.
