Inspiration

We noticed a common creative block: people often have meaningful photos but struggle to express them with the right words. Whether it's crafting a caption, writing a journal entry, or capturing a fleeting emotion, finding the perfect copy can feel impossible. We wanted to solve that — and make storytelling accessible, emotional, and instant.

What it does

Storytell is an AI-powered tool that turns any uploaded photo into thoughtful, ready-to-use copy. Users simply add a photo, select a tone and format, and the app generates tailored content — whether it's an Instagram caption, a private journal entry, a poetic reflection, or even a heartfelt letter.

How we built it

We took an unconventional approach: rather than jumping straight into code, we focused on designing the perfect single-shot prompt that could build the entire app in Bolt.new from scratch. Through trial and error, we refined the prompt to generate a fully responsive, cinematic landing page — complete with a GIF hero section, bolt logo, anchor-linked navigation, custom modals, and a real-time Journal Vault. From prompt tuning to user flow mapping, we let AI co-design the experience with us.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Honestly? Almost none — because testing and fine-tuning prompts is our jam. We built the entire experience using a single one-shot prompt, and it worked as intended. The only adjustment we made was making the Bolt logo more prominent and linking it to the Bolt homepage for proper credit. And also fixing some small bugs, like regenerate button.

What we learned

Fine-tuning a single prompt can make or break the final result — precision matters. Drawing inspiration from other apps helped shape our design direction, but understanding user needs and their emotional journey was even more important. And thankfully, Bolt made it ridiculously easy — we were able to build the entire app in under 3 minutes.

What's next for Storytell

We’re entering the next phase: testing the product with real users, gathering feedback, and iterating based on what resonates. Our immediate goal is to validate the concept in-market — and continue building from there.

Launching login and sync for persistent journaling

Adding voice-to-text for easier context input

Exploring multi-photo story generation for richer narratives

Building a “Story Stream” with daily prompts and community inspiration

Expanding export options to include printed keepsakes and digital zines
