Inspiration

When we discovered Qloo's Taste API, we immediately saw the transformative potential for storytelling. The challenge every writer faces isn't just creating characters. It's creating believable characters that feel authentically human.

We're building StoryMap around this core insight, starting with our flagship tool:

Hyper-Realistic Character Generator

Instead of generic character traits like "loves coffee," our tool leverages Qloo's taste database to create three-dimensional personalities: "drinks oat milk cortados, follows indie ceramic artists on Instagram, and has strong opinions about font choices." These aren't random quirks - they're culturally consistent preferences that create internally coherent characters who feel real.

But this is just the beginning. We envision a complete ecosystem of tools for authors and screenwriters:

Cultural Authenticity Checker: Help writers accurately portray characters from different backgrounds by understanding actual taste patterns and cultural preferences of various demographics and communities.

Character Evolution Tracker: Map how a character's tastes would realistically change throughout their story arc based on their experiences and growth.

Story-Audience Matching Engine: Analyze your story's themes, aesthetics, and character types to predict which specific audience segments will connect most deeply with your work.

Trend Prediction for Storytellers: Identify emerging cultural movements and taste shifts before they hit mainstream, helping creators tap into what audiences will crave next.

Niche Audience Discovery: Find unexpected audience pockets who might love your work - like discovering that fans of certain indie bands are also drawn to specific types of psychological thrillers.

What is StoryMap?

StoryMap is a writer's community led by industry veteran Justin Pollard—live workshops plus AI-powered storytelling tools.

After 33 years of bringing stories to life on screen and in print, Justin brings unparalleled expertise to the StoryMap community. His film credits include acclaimed productions like Elizabeth, The Four Feathers, Atonement, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, Pirates of the Caribbean, Mary Poppins Returns, and Mulan.

In television, Justin's journey spans from Assistant Producer on Time Team to consulting on The Tudors, Vikings, and Peaky Blinders. He's currently Co-Executive Producer of MGM's Vikings: Bloodaxe.

Beyond the screen, Justin is the author of 11 books, including the Amazon bestseller Alfred the Great – the Man Who made England. As a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and Royal Geographical Society, regular columnist for History Today and E&T, and British Society of Magazine Editors Columnist of the Year 2014, he brings both creative and academic rigor to storytelling education. He's also contributed to 20 seasons of QI for the BBC.

Justin's unique combination of entertainment industry success and historical scholarship makes him the perfect mentor for writers looking to create compelling, authentic narratives.

How we built StoryMap:

We're at the exciting early stages of StoryMap's development, having received the green light just this Monday. The prototype shared in this application represents our proof of concept.

Current stack:

  • Bolt.new for rapid prototyping
  • OpenAI for language models
  • Qloo Taste API for cultural intelligence

Challenges we ran into

The primary challenge has been building a technical foundation robust enough to handle the sophisticated cultural intelligence we want to provide. We're bringing aboard a close friend as technical co-founder to ensure our implementation matches our ambitious vision for leveraging Qloo's capabilities.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Speed to MVP: Concept to prototype in 4-5 hours
  • Smart Qloo integration: Specific, valuable use cases for writers
  • Industry credibility: Justin Pollard's authentic storytelling expertise (well I am anyway!)

What we learned

  • That you can use third party data ethically
  • The importance of prompting
  • The need for a good developer

What's next for StoryMap

We're raising investment and building this community. We've got an extremely well-balanced team when our tech support arrives, and we're genuinely excited about working with Qloo technology to help bring stories to life.

Depending on how you define "budding" (just started vs. actively pursuing), you're looking at: 15–35 million globally engaged aspiring writers and screenwriters in our TAM.

This audience is:

  • Hungry for tools, feedback, and exposure
  • Active on social media, forums, and niche communities
  • Willing to pay for valuable education, feedback, or publishing opportunities

The goal is for StoryMap & Qloo to enable stories and scripts that understand culture and human connection at a deep level.

Note: This is an MVP for our live project and we know that it isn't fully secure. We'll secure it properly and likely fork development to avoid interfering with the judging process. We aren't developers.

Thank you for this incredible opportunity and we'd very much welcome help from the Qloo team to help bring our vision to life!
