Inspiration
Inspired by the future of sharing economy when we are reusing everything around us.
Storage items are often forgotten and gone past their useful lives. These items are then being thrown away and go through a long process of defining, executing and turning their recycling potential to raw material. Nearly 50 percent of household waste in landfills in Finland are burned and thus they affect the environment.
What if there is a way to tell consumers when the storage-dusted items can be reutilised by someone else before they are becoming unusable?
Combining the ideas of sharing economy through trading used items and the environmental contribution of recycling, our team found the answers to the question:
How can we earn benefits by sharing our items with others and care about protecting the environment too?
What it does
The concept idea is to create an "Explain like I'm 5" user-friendly design to show the generic consumers the most important data about their items in real time.
Users use a service package that includes NFC tags for their items, tracking sensor inside their storage and Storma's app service.
Residents can now manage their own storage usage history and their items whenever they are and be proactive about their decision-makings. They can check immediate items' information through Storma when inside storage by moving the phone closer to read the NFC tags on their items. Morever, the items usage history is based on their location in and out of the storage range.
When the application learns that an item is left unused for a certain time based on consumers' storage activities, it suggests consumers to take action to either sell or donate the item away for people in need or local recycle centres. In that way, users can utilise their unused items to earn profits and help others too.
How we built it
User study, data research, NFC tags concept, Google Image recognition, design testing, tons of paper prototypes, Axure RP8 and Sketch.
Challenges we ran into
We lacked the technical know-how to implement this in such a sprint, however, since we're a team of UI/UX designers and front end developer, we wanted to create a beautiful storytelling prototype based on a solid concept.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Finished a working prototype with all of our initial functions.
What we learned
Teamwork motivation and spirit can be mended if we have the right mentors. Even when things seemed so hopeless and our self-esteems had a meltdown, it is good that foods are available to pick us up.
What's next for Storma
Actual implementation of NFC tags trigger in app and API. The work is a proof of concept to use for testing and further development.
