Our initial inspiration came from the fact we were all finding it so hard to find study space on campus. We thought what if we used the Estimote-iBeacons to track and measure how many people were inside the library at any given time, then using that information I would know whether or not I should even bother going into the library looking for a place to sit. Then when we got the beacons we realized that they were still relatively inaccurate. We instead decided to use a similar technology but we felt that the we could use the iBeacons to collect a lot of data and then develop visualizations for it. We understood that many large retailers/businesses already have some method in place for tracking consumers purchases and spending habits, but we wanted to support the local businesses. We thought if we could implement our technology to local businesses, then we could improve their chances of survival against large retailers.
Our app in the end has 2 components. The first is the mobile application which the user uses. The retailer would provide us with coupons/deals that we could push to consumers as they pass relevant areas in the store. This would act as an incentive to actually open the app. The app will then periodically send data to the server. This data is just the beacon id and the distance the consumer is away from the beacon. Now our backend comes into play. The backend server will provide powerful analytics and metrics for the local retailers that they would not have had access to before. Some of these work by using the distance away from 3 beacons to triangulate the customers actual location in the store. With this data we could plot and analyze the areas of the store that are getting the most attention and the least attention. Furthermore, we also send time spent and so a local business owner is now able to see on average, how long people spend at each part of the store. Since each user is unique, there is also the ability to filter by each person and view an individual customers shopping habits and thus improve your customer retention. Essentially, we provide a powerful backend for local businesses to monitor and analyze their consumers so they can inevitably provide a better user experience.
