Inspiration
We were inspired by the recent and ongoing protests on the Willow Project, which is something that threatens the future of climate change and safety of our world's environment. We noticed that environmental science was one of the categories this year and immediately thought of this as something we could work with.
What it does
StopWillow is a website with information about the Willow Project and works to raise awareness and advocate for the prevention of implementation of this project. There is also an interactive map element of Alaska, the major area the Willow Project is affecting, so that each user can learn about the different regions, animals, and habitats the project would affect.
How we built it
We built StopWillow using VSCode with the programming languages HTML and JavaScript, and the programming language modifier CSS.
Challenges we ran into
We had difficulty figuring out how to make the map interactive and went through many different ways of doing this. Some of our previous ideas were grouping separate images of the regions into a larger one and another one was using the color of the region clicked to determine what information to bring up. In the end, we decided to use the coordinates of one image because it was the simplest yet most effective. This way, we could group different regions but still only have one image.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of our website building in general because until today, we didn't know any HTML or CSS. We were able to successfully complete building one with no prior information.
What we learned
We learned how to design a website from scratch with different appealing elements.
What's next for StopWillow
The next step is promoting and publishing StopWillow so that the general public would actually be able to view and learn information about this current environmental issue.
