The method proposed here enables caller authentication for fighting spam and scam calls. The best method for caller identification is currently through the the ANI (Automatic Number Identification), however the ANI provides no authentication, and spammers/ scammers can hide behind VoIP service providers and other gateways into the phone system. Further, at some time somebody may find a way to spoof the ANI on a large enough scale to enable robocallers. The proposed authentication method by itself will not stop robocalls. It can be used as an addition to my method described in Stop Spam and Scam Calls, or to other methods that partially or fully rely on the ANI. Implementation of the method involves US-based telcos and bona fide VoIP service providers. Protecting US consumers from malicious calls will be much enhanced if both participate.
