Inspiration

The solidarity we give today is the solidarity we receive tomorrow. That is what being European is all about. In Spain, with less than 50 million inhabitants, we have more deaths than in China, which counts more than 1 billion inhabitants. We are going through hell, more than 5,000 doctors, nurses, auxiliaries, and ambulance personnel have been infected, many hospitals are overwhelmed, the coronavirus patients die alone, without a family member to close their eyes.

This is not a war, it is a pandemic.

What it does

Stop Pandemic is a new product designed to combat the Coronavirus pandemic.

It consists of a device, in the form of a patch on the chest, that sends vital signs through Bluetooth to a mobile phone and from there to the cloud via a mobile application.

The device detects vital signs and performs a first analysis (pre-alarm) of variables out of range, according to the thresholds set by the doctor.

The 25mm O.D. device is attached to the chest with a biocompatible adhesive. With a 30 day battery life that allows uninterrupted monitoring it also includes Bluetooth 5.0 wireless communication and is waterproof. It measures heart and respiration rate, temperature, blood oxygen, physical activity, anatomical position, cough detection and allows remote monitoring of the lungs using machine learning techniques to detect respiratory problems and dehydration.

In the event of an alert, it connects via Bluetooth 5 with the user's mobile, which communicates through the mobile network with the Medical Center, including alarm data and the user's geolocation, to determine an appropriate course of action.

The CRM captures the generated alerts and creates a notice for a doctor to call the patient to verify their wellness status. A home visit by a doctor is arranged if required. In both cases we have the follow-up of calls and face-to- face attention. Comments written by healthcare personnel, as well as a recording of the conversation with the saved ID number, are saved for each call.

How I built it

Integrated Systems Design and Development is a digital medicine startup based in Madrid, Spain and is the company behind the brand VidaApp. We are in charge of designing and manufacturing the medical device. MediBioSense Ltd from the UK is helping with the apps in Android and iOS and the data transmission and analytics software. HigiaTech will put the medical professionals and the alarms management.

Challenges I ran into

Stop Pandemic is not a common pulse-oximeter. It does lots of things more. It senses also the temperature, the cardiac and respiratory pulses, the anatomical position, the physical activity as a pedometer and it allows remote auscultation to hear the heart and the lungs, detecting cough and other respiratory events.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

It is a new, affordable and very complete Medical device. The product deals with hardware, firmware and software including machine learning and AI to interpret the cardiorespiratory health. We have managed to gather a very professional team.
