Inspiration
Fast fashion has been destroying our environment while implementing unethical practices. They employ sweatshops, mostly worked in by women of color and children, where they must sew garments in terrible conditions for extremely low pay. Keeping up with the trends at a low cost is a key component of their business model, so the quality suffers creating a cycle where consumers are always buying to keep up with the trends and discarding clothes as it quickly falls apart. The production process also leads to lots of pollution with carbon emissions, the toxin from dyes, and the chemicals released when making synthetic fabrics. Furthermore, there is a ton of energy that is wasted with the transportation of these goods. These brands not only implement unethical behavior in production, but also in design where they steal garments from small business and produces them at lower quality and price points.
What it does
Stop Fast Fashion, helps to explain the issue, and highlights brands, small businesses, and second-hand shops to buy clothing from that are sustainable, ethical, and environmentally conscious. It also highlights black-owned businesses. The site also discusses downsizing one's wardrobe and how to donate clothes.
How I built it
I built the website using HTML, CSS, and Javascript, allowing people to navigate the site with ease and filter to businesses.
Challenges I ran into
Deciding what information to showcase about businesses and how to populate it in the HTML as it was filtered was a challenge. I worked through that by using more classes and interpolation.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I am proud of the ability to showcase businesses that deserve our attention.
What I learned
I learned the importance of display and organization of information to make it interesting and readable.
What's next for Stop Fast Fashion
Currently, it only features a few businesses, but in the future, it can be developed to feature a plethora of brands and small businesses. Additionally, as the site grows it can use affiliate links and promo codes to make money similar to Rakuten.
