Inspiration

Our inspiration stems from the peace gardening brings and how that would bring senior citizens with osteoporosis peace.

What it does

Our solution is a web application that helps senior citizens with osteoporosis to start their fitness journey by encouraging them to take up gardening as an alternative to exercise. Our website explains the benefits of gardening as an exercise and also has a tool where users can input integer values like weight restriction, free time, bone density, and number of people they have to help them, and they will receive an encouraging message from us about how they can overcome all these restrictions.

How we built it

We built it using the Next.js framework. We have a background using HTML/CSS/JavaScript to build websites, but we wanted to try using Next.js and React, both of which were new to us, to increase our knowledge in the world of web applications.

Challenges we ran into

We had never used Next.js before, so we had to learn and get used to a whole new world while building this project. We overcame these challenges by learning online, researching things as we went, and searched up how to fix things were going wrong. We also wanted to make sure our web application was accessible for users, especially senior citizens, so we had to do a lot of research to learn what UI is the most accessible for them. One significant challenge we ran into was how to receive the input value from the text boxes on the "Tool" page as variables to analyze them and provide the user with reassuring information. As we had never used variables or if-statements in React before, we had to learn the syntax from scratch and because the resources we found online were so varied, we had to write the original code ourselves and problem solve.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We overcame some pretty big bugs in our code, and we're glad we were able to overcome these challenges using our own problem solving skills. We also are proud that we got our tool to work, and we're happy with the design of our final product.

What we learned

We got a good grasp on how to use React and the Next.js framework. We also learned how to make functions and variables using the React syntax. We also learned that needed to create more contrast within our color palettes for accessibility and that we needed to streamline layout for better navigation

What's next for stop and smell the flowers.

We're hoping to add a customizable font size feature for senior citizens to better see and text to speech for accessibility. We also want to integrate our web application into a mobile app, because we feel this application would be especially good if it was accessible on the go. With this mobile app integration, we'd like to add a way to keep track of your fitness as your garden, a check off list of sorts where you are able to keep track of all the gardening activities that you do throughout the day, and a way to make a premade plan of activities. We also hope to add more advanced technologies that older generations can trust to our tool to make it more accurate and give more specific reassurance.
